What this tool does

This tool cuts one subtitle file into several files: at the times you enter, every so many subtitles, or into equal parts. Each part can start again at 00:00:00 so it matches a split video. Parts keep the original format and line endings.

How to split a subtitle file

  1. Select Choose files and add a subtitle file, or use Paste text.
  2. Under Split, choose At times, Every N subtitles or Into equal parts.
  3. Enter the time, such as 00:45:00,000, the number of subtitles per part, or the number of parts.
  4. Select Split and check each part in the result.
  5. Select Download all (ZIP), or Download next to one part.

Options explained

  • Split at takes one or more times. Separate several with “;”, for example 00:30:00,000; 01:00:00,000.
  • Subtitles per part defaults to 500. Number of parts defaults to 2, up to 20.
  • Start each part at 00:00 is on. Every part then starts at zero.
  • Each part keeps the input format and line endings and is saved as UTF-8, named with “.part1”, “.part2” and so on.

Example

Split at 00:45:00,000 (with Split at set to 00:45:00,000):

1
00:44:58,000 --> 00:45:01,000
Hold on.

2
00:45:03,000 --> 00:45:05,000
Here we go.

Part 1 and part 2:

1
00:44:58,000 --> 00:45:01,000
Hold on.
1
00:00:03,000 --> 00:00:05,000
Here we go.

Format notes and limits

  • Reads SRT, VTT, ASS, SSA, SBV and TXT with times. ASS headers and styles are copied into every part.
  • Up to 100 parts per file, 50 files, 20 MB per file.
  • To join parts again, use Merge subtitles. To move a whole part earlier or later, use Shift subtitles.

Questions

Where does a subtitle that crosses the split point go?

Into the part where it starts. It is not cut in two, so its text stays together.

Why start each part at 00:00?

If the video is cut into parts, each video part starts at zero. Start each part at 00:00 subtracts the start of the part, so the subtitles match. Turn it off to keep the original times.

How do equal parts work?

The time from 00:00 to the end of the last subtitle is divided into equal lengths. A part with no subtitles, for example during a long silence, is skipped and the page says so.

Can I split several files at once?

Yes. Each file is split with the same settings, and Download all (ZIP) saves every part.

Can I join the parts again?

Yes, with Merge subtitles. Enter the length of each part, and the result has the original times.
