What this tool does
This tool converts Advanced SubStation (.ass) and SubStation Alpha (.ssa) subtitles to SRT. It removes styling codes and drawings, turns ASS line breaks into real line breaks, and lets you keep only the styles you want, such as dialogue without signs. Files are converted in your browser.
How to convert ASS to SRT
- Select Choose files and pick one or more .ass or .ssa files, or drag them onto the green area.
- Check the list. If a file has several styles, untick the ones you don’t want under Styles to keep.
- Select Convert.
- Select Download next to a file, or Download all (ZIP) when you converted several files.
Options explained
- Keep italic, bold and underline (on by default). ASS codes such as
{\i1}and{\i0}become<i>and</i>, which most SRT players show. Turn it off for SRT without any tags. - Styles to keep (shown per file, all ticked by default). Appears when a file uses two or more styles. You cannot untick the last style.
- Line endings (default: Windows, CRLF). Works in every player; pick LF only if another program asks for it.
- Add UTF-8 BOM (off by default). Turn it on only if an older Windows program shows broken characters.
Example
This ASS file:
[Script Info]
ScriptType: v4.00+
[Events]
Format: Layer, Start, End, Style, Name, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, Effect, Text
Dialogue: 0,0:00:01.00,0:00:03.50,Default,,0,0,0,,{\i1}Is anyone still on the dock?{\i0}
Dialogue: 0,0:00:04.20,0:00:06.90,Default,,0,0,0,,Just me.\NAnd the rain.
becomes this SRT file:
1
00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,500
<i>Is anyone still on the dock?</i>
2
00:00:04,200 --> 00:00:06,900
Just me.
And the rain.
Format notes and limits
- ASS stores times in hundredths of a second; SRT uses milliseconds, so
0:00:03.50becomes00:00:03,500. \Nand\nbecome line breaks and\hbecomes a space. Drawings ({\p1}shapes) and other{…}codes are removed, and lines that had only a drawing or an effect are left out.- Embedded fonts and pictures (
[Fonts],[Graphics]) are ignored. - The page warns you when styling was removed and says what kind.
- Up to 50 files at once, 20 MB per file and 200 MB in total.

Questions
What is lost when converting ASS to SRT?
SRT has no styles, so fonts, colors, sizes, outlines, positions and effects such as fades or karaoke timing are removed. The text, the times, line breaks and (by default) italic, bold and underline are kept.
How do I remove signs or song lyrics from fansubs?
When a file uses more than one style, the file list shows **Styles to keep** with each style and its number of lines. Untick styles such as Signs or Karaoke before you convert, and those lines are left out of the SRT file.
Does it convert SSA files too?
Yes. SubStation Alpha (.ssa, the older version 4 format) and Advanced SubStation (.ass, version 4+) are both read.
Why are the lines in a different order?
ASS files can list lines in any order and show several at once, while SRT players expect lines in time order. The converter sorts the lines by start time. Comment lines are skipped.
Can I convert several ASS files at once?
Yes. Add up to 50 files (20 MB each, 200 MB in total) and download each SRT file on its own or all of them in one ZIP file.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Your files are processed in your browser and are not uploaded to our servers.
