What this tool does
This tool checks SRT, WebVTT, ASS, SSA and SBV files for overlapping times, wrong order, empty or duplicate lines, and subtitles that are too short or too long. It fixes the problems you choose and shows a table of each problem before and after. Lines are renumbered at the end.
How to fix an SRT file
- Select Choose files and add subtitle files, or use Paste text.
- Choose which problems to fix. All fixes are on by default, and overlaps shorten the earlier subtitle.
- Select Fix and read the Check results table: each problem is counted before and after fixing.
- Select Download for one file or Download all (ZIP) for several files.
To check a file without changing it, turn off every fix and set Overlapping subtitles to Leave as they are. The report still counts each problem.
Options explained
- Renumber subtitles, Sort by start time, Delete empty subtitles and Delete exact duplicates are on. Duplicates have the same start, end and text; the first copy stays.
- Overlapping subtitles defaults to shortening the earlier subtitle. Move the later subtitle keeps every duration and moves the following subtitles later as needed.
- Minimum gap between subtitles defaults to no gap. 83 ms leaves two frames at 24 fps between subtitles.
- Lengthen short subtitles extends subtitles under 700 ms, only into free time. Shorten long subtitles cuts subtitles over 7000 ms. Both limits can be changed.
- If you leave duplicates and overlaps in place, the tool may shorten a subtitle further to keep it distinct within the duration limits. If the limits leave no room, it asks you to change the settings.
- The output keeps the input format and is saved as UTF-8. SRT and ASS files keep their line endings; WebVTT and SBV are saved with LF line endings.
Example
With the default options, the subtitles are sorted and the first one now ends when the second one starts:
1
00:00:06,000 --> 00:00:08,000
See you tomorrow.
2
00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:04,000
Hold the door.
3
00:00:03,500 --> 00:00:05,000
I've got it.
Output:
1
00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,500
Hold the door.
2
00:00:03,500 --> 00:00:05,000
I've got it.
3
00:00:06,000 --> 00:00:08,000
See you tomorrow.
Format notes and limits
- Reads SRT, VTT, ASS, SSA and SBV. ASS comment lines are not checked or changed. ASS and SSA times are saved in hundredths of a second: minimum durations and gaps round up, and maximum durations round down, to meet your limits.
- Common mistakes are repaired while reading, such as missing numbers, a dot instead of a comma, or “->” instead of “–>”. The file shows a note when this happens.
- Up to 50 files, 20 MB per file and 200 MB in total.
- If the whole file is early or late, use Shift subtitles; if the delay grows, use Sync subtitles. To remove sound notes, use Clean subtitles. To rewrap long lines, use Subtitle line breaker.
Questions
What does the checker look for?
Subtitles out of order, overlapping times, gaps shorter than the minimum, subtitles that end at or before they start, durations shorter or longer than the limits, empty subtitles, exact duplicates and lines over 42 characters.
How are overlapping subtitles fixed?
By default the earlier subtitle ends when the next one starts. It is never shortened below 700 ms or its original length, whichever is less; if that is not enough, the next subtitle moves later. You can instead move every later subtitle and keep all durations.
Why are some short subtitles still too short?
Short subtitles are only lengthened into free time before the next subtitle, so nothing new overlaps. If the next subtitle starts too soon, the report says some could not be lengthened. Shifting or retiming that part may help.
Does it renumber SRT files?
Yes. SRT files are always saved numbered 1, 2, 3 in order. For WebVTT files, Renumber subtitles rewrites the cue IDs.
Are long lines fixed?
No. Lines over 42 characters are only reported, because rewrapping changes how the text reads. Rewrap them with the Subtitle line breaker.
